Tees Archeology Dig
Tees Archaeology provides archaeological services to the people and organisations of the Tees Valley to raise awareness, protect and access the Historic Environment. The team frequently run community archaeology events to engage local communities in investigating, recording and excavating sites in the area.
Tees Archaeology maintains a record (Historic Environment Record, or HER) of all the known archaeological sites in Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees. This is a digital record which can be accessed via our website and in person. It monitors all planning applications and other development proposals in Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees and advise the local planning authorities on a suitable response should a proposed development have the potential to affect an archaeological site. It also hold the physical, paper and photographic archives for archaeological sites in the area, including material which has yet to be fully reported.
In summer 2025, Tees Archeology will be working within the grounds of Preston Park Museum & Grounds, along the line of the original route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Having completed an initial excavation in April 2025, the team now plans to complete community surveys of the entire trackbed within the grounds, as well as to investigate further exciting elements along the line of the first passenger railway.
